what are the best tropical plants for the Houston area to grow?

to plant around the pool and patio and how would I protect during the cooler season

Answers:

1I lived in Houston about six months and there are quite a few tropicals that you can grow but a lot you won't even need to protect. Plumeria is always a great option for around pools. Once they bloom the smell is wonderful. Hibiscus is another good option. Jasmine grows like crazy there, as well as eucalyptis. Although I think it is technically a zone 10, so you may have to bring it inside during the really cold times unless it is a sheltered place.
