How should I transplant a leafy tropical-like plant? | |
I have a beautiful plant which I dont know the name of, that grows quite big and has large leaves. The top of the leaves are dark green and a little glossy, the underside is purple.
I want to take a small section of the plant and transplant it to another area of the landscape. (this way I have two of them)
Know anything about splitting and transplanting? Do you think this is the kind of plant that you just dig up, and pull a section off roots and all, then plant it anywhere? Or should I cut off a stem and plant it, or maybe put it in water?
Like I said I dont know what this plant is called or anything else about it. It seems like a tropical perennial. Tips, suggestions?
it isnt a hosta, I have plenty of those. They usually dont get red on the underside of the leaf. This plant is rather large when its full grown. Around 4 ft tall.
Answers:
1Planting, transplanting and dividing should be done in early spring when the leaves begin to emerge. Dividing can be done either by cutting away a section of a clump with a sharp shovel or by lifting the root mass and separating it by hand. Separate the plant so that an "eye" is present in each division. Very small divisions tend to establish slowly.
